Practicum/Internship Opportunities

Library Experience Program

We welcome the opportunity to introduce students to public library work and believe such an experience should be mutually beneficial for both the student and the library. The Library Experience Program includes a general orientation to the library, various learning opportunities and the hands-on experiential activities needed to fulfill the requirements of your unpaid practicum or internship.

Please allow four weeks for us to review your application and other documentation. Decisions are made as soon as possible after receiving the application. If you are selected, we will contact you to set up a meeting with your assigned Library Experience Program supervisor to work out the details.

2024 Teen Tech Ambassador Program – Summer Internship (paid)

This summer, Heights Libraries will offer two paid ($1,000) internships to local high school students in the area of digital literacy education. The program includes a general orientation to the library, various learning opportunities, and hands-on experiential activities. Specifically, the interns will shadow staff assisting customers in the computer/multi-media labs and observe computer classes. By the end of the program, interns will demonstrate what they have learned by co-teaching a computer class with help from one of the library’s Tech Trainers. Interns will have the opportunity to document their work and achievements using Adobe Portfolio.

The program’s goals are to:

  • Provide important on-the-job training to high school students in the area of digital literacy/technology training;
  • Give local high school students the opportunity to gain important customer service skills (i.e., people skills and relationship building) and develop their emotional intelligence in a professional working environment;
  • Give local high school students the opportunity to give back to their community and to share their technology know-how with others; and
  • Help the library fulfill its mission of “opening doors, opening minds.”

Program Requirements
The program is open to Cleveland Heights and University Heights residents between the ages of 16 and 19. Anyone under 18 years must have signed permission from a parent or guardian to participate in the program. Applicants must also be able to commit to being at the library at least 16-hours per week for a period of 6 weeks (June 16-July 27) this summer. Family members of current employees or members of the Board of Trustees are not eligible to apply (Per HR Manual, Sec. 2.5 C. 1).

The application process is a competitive one and we will select students for interviews based on responses to questions on the program application.
